King of Hungary. Reigned from 997 to 1038. Known as the Holy King. Son of Géza, the last chief of the Árpád dynasty. Childhood name Balik. Baptized as a Christian, he took the name Stephen. His wife was Bavarian Duchess Gisela. In 1000, he received the crown bestowed by Pope Sylvester II and became the first king of Hungary. He established a unified Hungarian feudal state by conquering foreign tribes within the country, putting down tribal rebellions in the eastern part of the country, establishing a parish system, and improving the administrative organization.
