A restaurant that serves oyster dishes in a tatami room set up inside a boat moored on the riverbank. It can be found in Osaka, Hiroshima, the Setouchi region, Kyoto, Wakayama, and other areas. Fishermen from Kusatsu Village, Aki Province (now Nishi Ward, Hiroshima City) began loading oysters onto their boats and shipping them to Osaka to sell them around the Genroku period (1688-1704). By chance, during the Great Osaka Fire in December 1707 (4th year of the Hoei period), a boat selling oysters saved a notice board at the west end of Koraibashi Bridge, and the shogunate granted them exclusive rights to operate along the river in Osaka. From then on, they began selling oysters and serving oyster dishes. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
