...After the talkies, Ford had only made one western, "Stagecoach" (1939), but after the success of this film, he made five more in succession over the three years from 1947 to 1950: "Fort Apache", "The Three Godfathers" (both 1948), "The Yellow Ribbon" (1949), "Wagon Train" and "Forts of the Rio Grande" (both 1950), and during this period his name became inseparable from westerns (in Japan he is known as "the god of westerns"). Based on the famous "Fight at the O.K. Corral," the plot itself is conventional, centering on the confrontation between Sheriff Wyatt Earp and the lawless cattle ranchers, the Clanton family (it is also a remake of "The Border Patrol" (1939), starring Randolph Scott and directed by Allan Dwan). However, as a review at the time of its release stated, "The wilderness, the saloon, the cheap hotel, and other things that in an average western are merely backdrops for the action, here they begin to tell a story," the film's appeal lies in the vivid portrayal of the life of a pioneer town, the bartender, the traveling actor, the barber, and other people who live in the west, and the poetry that permeates the desolate landscape. The square dance scene on Sunday morning in a church still under construction and without a roof is considered to be the film's most famous scene.
