Jensen, Johannes Vilhelm
Born January 20, 1873. Himmellan, Farse
[Died] November 25, 1950. Copenhagen Danish novelist, poet and essayist. Received the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1944. He studied medicine at university, but was influenced by G. Brandes to study literature. He made his debut with Himmerlandsfolk (3 volumes, 1898), and with his bold writing style and generous spirit, he became a standard-bearer of 20th century literature. After Kongens Fald (1901), Madame d'Ora (04), Hjulet (05), and Exotic Tales (07-09), he gained worldwide fame with his six-volume series that colorfully traced the progress of mankind from Bræen (08) to Christofer Columbus (22). This was later compiled as Den Lange Rejse (The Long Journey) (3 volumes, pp. 22-24). His other works include Myter (07-44), a mixture of short stories and essays.
