Willow bug flounder (willow bug flounder) - Willow bug flounder (English spelling)
A marine fish of the family Pleuronectidae in the order Pleuronectiformes. It is found throughout Japan from southern Hokkaido southward, and also in China. Its name comes from the fact that its body is highly laterally compressed and elongated, resembling a willow leaf; similarly, in Niigata, Hokuriku, and Sanin, it is called Sasagarei. Its body color is pale brown, with well-developed lateral lines on both sides. Its mouth is small, and the distance between its eyes is narrow. Its spawning season is from January to April in southern Honshu, and from June to July in the Tohoku region and northward. Its eggs are spherical, pelagic, and 1.2 to 1.3 mm in size, with a large mesh-like pattern on the surface of its egg membrane.
