A painting term. An Italian word meaning "blurred" or "evaporated." A painting technique in which the outline of the painting is blurred to create the sense of depth in the space surrounding an object (→ Chiaroscuro). Leonardo da Vinci considered this to be one of the essential qualities of painting art and placed great importance on it.
