Sfumato (English spelling)

A painting term. An Italian word meaning "blurred" or "evaporated." A painting technique in which the outline of the painting is blurred to create the sense of depth in the space surrounding an object (→ Chiaroscuro). Leonardo da Vinci considered this to be one of the essential qualities of painting art and placed great importance on it. 絵画用語。「ぼかした」「蒸発した」という意のイタリア語。絵画技法で物体を包む空間の厚みを出すために画面輪郭線をぼかして描く法 (→キアーロスクーロ ) 。レオナルド・ダ・ビンチはこれを絵画芸術の本質の一つとみて重要視している。
