…When tungsten was mixed in with tin ore in the old days, it would take away a lot of tin and turn it into slag, so miners disliked it and called it Wolfrahm (German) because it was a ravenous wolf and the filth it produced. For this reason, tungsten ore (wolframite) was called Wolframit from around the 16th century, and the element came to be called Wolfram in German. In 1758, Swedish mineralogist A.F. Cronstedt extracted the element as a metal and called it tungsten (heavy stone in Swedish) because of its high density, and its oxide was also found in the mineral tungsten (present-day scheelite) by Swedish mineralogist K.W.
