A port city in southwest Italy, located on Cape Lilibea (Boeo) at the western end of Sicily. It belongs to the province of Trapani in Sicily. Founded by the Carthaginians in the 6th century BC, it became the most important base for the rule of Sicily. After it was taken over by the Romans in 241 BC, it was the base for the Carthaginian expedition. In 1860, G. Garibaldi landed here with 1,000 Red Shirts and used it as a base for the invasion of southern Italy. It is now an export port for Marsala wine and is also known as a fishing port. The town has a strong Arabic influence, and a Muslim mosque still stands. Population 77,218 (1991 estimate).
