The word snorkel comes from the Low German dialect word Schnorchel, which means nose. It is a tubing system that draws in and expels air at shallow depths. There are a variety of types, from a simple single tube for swimming to a separate snorkel with a check valve for the intake and exhaust systems used to operate the engines of submarines, underwater bulldozers, and oceanographic buoys. [Swimming snorkel] A breathing tube, usually made of plastic or synthetic rubber, that allows a fish to breathe while swimming at the surface of the ocean without having to raise its head above water.
