The Tale of Shimizu

Japanese: 清水物語 - きよみずものがたり

A Kana-zoshi (Japanese traditional story of Confucianism). Written by Chozan Irin'an. 2 volumes. Published in 1638 (Kan'ei 15). This book explains Confucian thought by listening to dialogues between a pilgrim and an old man, and between a monk and an audience during a visit to Kiyomizu-dera Temple, but it also contains political and moral theories. It has a strong didactic flavor. It had a great influence on Gion Monogatari (Tales of Gion), which refutes it from a Buddhist point of view, and on Kana-zoshi (Japanese traditional story of Confucianism and Buddhism) that explain the unity of the three religions. It was a best-seller at the time.

仮名草子。朝山意林庵作。2巻。寛永 15 (1638) 年刊。清水寺に参詣のおり，巡礼と老翁，僧侶と聴衆との問答などを聞くという形で，儒教思想を説いた書であるが，そればかりでなく，政治論や道徳論などについても記している。教訓的色彩が強い。仏者の立場からこれに反駁する『祇園物語』や，儒仏論，三教一致について説く仮名草子に与えた影響は大きい。当時のベストセラーであった。
