While epileptic seizures last for a short time, lasting within a minute or two, epileptic episodes are episodes of mental symptoms that last for hours to weeks, and are seen in a small percentage of epilepsy patients. They have also been called acute epileptic psychosis, but the WHO epilepsy glossary states that there is not necessarily a clear causal relationship between epileptic seizures and epileptic episodes, and that it is better to call them acute psychosis (psychotic episode) in epilepsy. There are classifications of epileptic episodes by H. Landolt (1964), J. H. Bruens (1973), and G. K. Köhler (1980), but there is no definitive classification yet.
