A type of Kabuki-Kyogen. Based on the love story between Ejima, a maidservant in Edo Castle, and Kabuki actor Ikushima Shingoro. The Ejima incident occurred in 1714 (Shotoku 4) when it was discovered by the elder Ejima that he had been intimate with actor Shingoro of the Yamamura-za theatre. Ejima was exiled to Takato in Shinshu and Ikushima to Miyakejima, over 1000 people involved were punished, and the Yamamura-za theatre was closed down. As a scandal related to the Tokugawa family, dramatization of the story was not permitted during the Edo period, but after the Meiji Restoration, it was often dramatized, including Kawatake Mokuami's "The Tale of Hourai Sogajima" in 1870 (Meiji 3).
