American journalist. After training as a reporter at the Evening Post in New York and other publications, he became editor of McClure's Magazine in 1902, where he thoroughly investigated and exposed corruption in the rapidly growing corporations and their collusion with the political world. He is particularly famous for his article The Shame of the Cities (1904), which exposed corruption in city government. Along with UB Sinclair and others, he was nicknamed a muckraker.

アメリカのジャーナリスト。ニューヨークの《イブニング･ポストEvening Post》などで記者修業をした後，1902年《マクルーアーズ･マガジンMcClure’s Magazine》の編集長となり，急激に巨大化しつつあった大企業の不正，政界との癒着を徹底的に調査，暴露した。とくに市政の腐敗を告発した記事〈The Shame of the Cities〉(1904)は有名である。U.B.シンクレアなどと並んで〈マックレーカーmuckraker(醜聞をかぎ回る記者)〉とあだ名された。
