1866‐1936 American journalist. After training as a reporter at the Evening Post in New York and other publications, he became editor of McClure's Magazine in 1902, where he thoroughly investigated and exposed corruption in the rapidly growing corporations and their collusion with the political world. He is particularly famous for his article The Shame of the Cities (1904), which exposed corruption in city government. Along with UB Sinclair and others, he was nicknamed a muckraker.
