In power systems, the frequency of AC power is set at 50Hz or 60Hz, but the rotational speed of the generator fluctuates due to changes in load, etc., and the frequency also fluctuates accordingly. In response to this, the term "regulator" refers to operating the generator's speed governor using an automatic frequency control device or similar to keep the frequency constant. When two AC systems are interconnected via DC, it can also refer to adjusting the DC power to accommodate the frequency fluctuations of the AC system.
