A Russian-born French painter. Together with his wife Natalia Goncharova (1881-1962), he played a part in the avant-garde art movement on the eve of the Russian Revolution. Starting out with neo-primitivism that incorporated Russian folk art, he formed the Donkey's Tail school in 1912. He then advocated Rayonism, moving towards non-objective painting. He worked on stage design for Diaghilev's Ballets Russes, and emigrated to France in 1915. He spent most of his life with Goncharova in France.

ロシア出身のフランスの画家。妻のナターリヤ・ゴンチャロワ〔1881-1962〕とともに，ロシア革命前夜の前衛芸術運動の一翼を担った。ロシアの民俗芸術を取り入れたネオ・プリミティビズムから出発し，1912年に〈ロバの尻尾〉派を結成。さらに〈レイヨニスム（光線主義）〉を主唱し，無対象絵画へと移行する。ディアギレフ率いるバレエ・リュッスの舞台美術に携わり，1915年国外に移住。ゴンチャロワとともに生涯の大半をフランスで送った。
