Ajanta

A hilly area in Maharashtra, western India. It is famous for its Buddhist rock-cut temples carved into cliffs. There are 30 caves in total. They were excavated one after another between the 1st century BCE and the 7th century CE, and consist of chaityas (shrines) and viharas (monk's quarters). The interior architecture, sculptures, wall paintings, and ceiling paintings are masterpieces representative of Indian art, and the wall paintings from the height of the Gupta dynasty, particularly those in caves 1, 2, 16, and 17, are excellent for their intense colors, sensual atmosphere, and orderly composition. It is also a valuable site as the origin of Buddhist painting. It was registered as a World Heritage Site in 1983.

インド西部，マハーラーシュトラ州にある丘陵地。崖に掘られた仏教の石窟寺院で有名。総数30洞。前１世紀ころから７世紀ころまでに次々と掘られたもので，チャイティヤ（祠堂）とビハーラ（僧房）からなる。内部建築，彫刻，壁画，天井画などはインド美術を代表する傑作で，特に第１，２，16，17の諸洞にみられるグプタ朝盛期の壁画は，濃密な色彩で官能的雰囲気をもち，整然たる画面構成ですぐれている。仏教絵画の源流としても貴重な遺跡。1983年，世界文化遺産に登録。
