A hilly area in Maharashtra, western India. It is famous for its Buddhist rock-cut temples carved into cliffs. There are 30 caves in total. They were excavated one after another between the 1st century BCE and the 7th century CE, and consist of chaityas (shrines) and viharas (monk's quarters). The interior architecture, sculptures, wall paintings, and ceiling paintings are masterpieces representative of Indian art, and the wall paintings from the height of the Gupta dynasty, particularly those in caves 1, 2, 16, and 17, are excellent for their intense colors, sensual atmosphere, and orderly composition. It is also a valuable site as the origin of Buddhist painting. It was registered as a World Heritage Site in 1983. →Related Articles Sigiriya|Bagh Source : Heibonsha Encyclopedia About MyPedia Information |
