Kansei Choshu Shokafu - Kansei Choshu Shokafu

This is a collection of genealogies of samurai families compiled by the Edo Shogunate during the Kansei and Bunka eras (1789-1818). The Shogunate began compiling this book in 1799 (Kansei 11) in order to revise and revise the "Kan'ei Shoka Keizuden," and finished it in 1812 (Bunka 9). During this time, more than 60 scholars and Shogunate officials, including Wakadoshiyori Hotta Masaatsu, were involved in the compilation. The Shogunate compiled the contents based on the genealogies submitted by daimyo and hatamoto during the Jokyo and Kansei eras (1684-1801), and completed a detailed collection of genealogies with a total of 1,530 volumes, including 1,520 volumes of text and 10 volumes of lists. It is the most accurate, extensive, and reliable biographical material for samurai families in the Edo period, and is often used as a research resource. The copy presented at the time of completion is preserved in the National Archives of Japan, and copies and typeset versions from the Edo period are in circulation.
