Japanese: 平賀粛学 - ひらがしゅくがく

This was the purge of the Faculty of Economics at the Imperial University of Tokyo that took place in 1939. Right-wing forces had been intensifying their attacks on liberals within the Imperial University since the Takigawa Incident (1933), and since Araki Sadao became Minister of Education (1938), the Ministry of Education had also been stepping up its interference in the university's autonomy. At the time, within the faculty, there was ongoing conflict between a group led by Kawai Eijiro and fascist forces including Hijikata Shigeyoshi. When Kawai's books were banned in October 1938, right-wing forces both inside and outside the university began to demand punishment for Kawai as a university figure.

1939年に起こった東京帝国大学経済学部教授会の粛清事件。滝川事件(1933)以来帝国大学内の自由主義者に対する右翼勢力の攻撃は強まっていたが，荒木貞夫の文相就任(1938)以来，文部省も大学の自治への介入の姿勢をいっそう強めていた。そのころ同学部では，河合栄治郎を中心とする一派と，土方成美などのファッショ的勢力との間で対立が続いていた。1938年10月河合の著作が発禁処分にあうや，大学人としての河合の処分を要求する学内外の右翼勢力の動きは高まりを見せた。
