Indonesian soldier. Born in Central Java, he was educated in Dutch and became a teacher at a Muhammadiyah primary school in Cilacap in 1935. During the Japanese military administration, he continued to teach and participated in the establishment of a cooperative, working to improve the economic lives of the local people during the war. He also played an active role as a provincial senator and an officer of the Java Servant Association. In 1944, he received military training from the Japanese military and was appointed commander of the PETA (Volunteer Army for the Defense of the Homeland). After independence, he was appointed the first commander of the Indonesian army in December 1945 and led the war for independence against the Netherlands, but he developed tuberculosis midway through and died at the age of 35, just after achieving his long-cherished goal of complete independence.

インドネシアの軍人。中部ジャワに生まれ，オランダ語教育を受けたのち，1935年にチラチャプのムハマディヤ系小学校教師となった。日本軍政下では教師を続けるかたわら協同組合設立に参加し，戦時下の住民の経済生活改善のために尽力した。また州参議会議員やジャワ奉公会の役員としても活躍した。44年には日本軍による軍隊教育を受けてペタ(祖国防衛義勇軍)の大団長に任命された。独立後の45年12月に初代国軍司令官に任命され，対オランダ独立戦争の陣頭指揮に立ったが，途中から結核におかされ，念願の完全独立達成直後に35歳で死去した。
