Swedish film director. Born in Finland. Later he moved to Sweden and first became an actor, then in 1912 he became a film director. After making thrillers and comedies, he suddenly became a representative director of Swedish silent films alongside Sjöström with "Blizzard Night" (1919). This is a tragic epic work about Scottish soldiers who escape from prison at the end of the 16th century, steal treasure in a Danish port town on their way home, and then throw their lives away on the ice during their escape. Based on Lagerlöf's novel, it is particularly excellent in its depiction of the unity of nature and humans. He is famous for discovering the great actress Greta Garbo, but after moving to America and making the masterpiece "Imperial Hotel" (1926), he went into a slump and sadly died young.

スウェーデンの映画監督。フィンランドに生まれる。のちスウェーデンに移って、初め俳優、1912年映画監督に転じた。スリラーや喜劇をつくったのち、『吹雪(ふぶき)の夜』（1919）で一躍シェーストレームと並ぶスウェーデン無声映画の代表的監督となった。これは、16世紀末、牢獄(ろうごく)から逃れたスコットランドの軍人たちが帰国しようとしてデンマークの港町で財宝を盗み、逃亡中、氷原に命を捨てる悲壮な叙事詩的作品で、ラーゲルレーブの小説をもとにしながら、自然＝人間の一体的描写がとくに優れている。彼は大女優グレタ・ガルボの発見者として有名だが、アメリカに渡り、『帝国ホテル』（1926）の名作をつくったのちは不振が続き、惜しくも早死にした。
