An archipelago off the coast of Hokkaido's Nemuro Peninsula. The main islands are Suishojima, Yurijima, Akiyurijima, Shibotsujima, and Tarakujima, covering an area of approximately 102 km2 . All of them are low-lying islands formed by raised marine plateaus. The islands are rich in fishing resources, but after World War II they were occupied by the Soviet Union, and there were frequent incidents of Soviet ships capturing Japanese fishing boats. Since 1963, kelp fishing has been permitted around Kaigarajima, the island closest to the mainland. In March 2008, the Geospatial Information Authority of Japan changed the name of the islands to the Habomai Islands. → Related topics Shikotan Island | Nemuro Peninsula | Cape Nosappu Source : Heibonsha Encyclopedia About MyPedia Information |
