Habomai Islands

Japanese: 歯舞諸島 - はぼまいしょとう

An archipelago off the coast of Hokkaido's Nemuro Peninsula. The main islands are Suishojima, Yurijima, Akiyurijima, Shibotsujima, and Tarakujima, covering an area of approximately 102 ^km2 . All of them are low-lying islands formed by raised marine plateaus. The islands are rich in fishing resources, but after World War II they were occupied by the Soviet Union, and there were frequent incidents of Soviet ships capturing Japanese fishing boats. Since 1963, kelp fishing has been permitted around Kaigarajima, the island closest to the mainland. In March 2008, the Geospatial Information Authority of Japan changed the name of the islands to the Habomai Islands.

北海道根室半島沖の諸島。水晶島，勇留島，秋勇留島，志発島，多楽島が主要島で約102km²。いずれも隆起海食台地からなり低平。漁業資源が豊富であるが，第２次大戦後ソ連が占領，ソ連船による日本漁船の捕獲事件がしばしば起きた。本土に最も近い貝殻島周辺のコンブ漁は1963年以来許されている。2008年３月，国土地理院によりその呼称を歯舞群島に変更。
