A new town in Herfordshire, southeast England, UK. Population 74,300 (1981). Located about 50 km north of London on the Great North Road, it was a small settlement with a town chartered in 1281 and a stagecoach station. With the expansion of the London metropolitan area, the new town was built as the first new town under the New Towns Act of 1946. While the old town has a 12th century church and a 16th century grammar school, the new town is a residential area centered around a shopping center, and industries such as electronics, aircraft parts, and cameras are located along the A1 highway.
