Malfante, A.

...Gold and slaves were brought from the south of the Sahara in exchange for clothing and accessories from North Africa and rock salt from the Sahara. In the 15th century, Genoese merchant Antonio Malfante (c. 1410-1450) infiltrated Tuat to obtain information about the golden empire of Mali and its great trading city of Timbuktu, which Europeans had only been able to reach through legendary rumors. According to his letters, at that time, many Jewish merchants, as well as Arab merchants, lived in the oasis and controlled a large part of the commercial trade.
