British critic. Born in Paris to Austrian-Jewish parents, he is an American citizen and has taught at the University of Geneva, Cambridge, Oxford and other universities after serving as a special research fellow at Churchill College, Cambridge. Since starting out with "Tolstoy or Dostoevsky" in 1959, he has engaged in civilization-critical commentary on an international scale, centering on his broad knowledge of European literature and thought and his multilingual background. In 1974 (Showa 49), he visited Japan at the invitation of Keio University and made a deep impression on various circles, engaging in heated debates with Japanese scholars of English and American literature and critics. His other critical works include Tragic Death (1961), Language and Silence (1968), Transterritorial Intelligence (1971), At Bluebeard's Castle (1971), After Babel (1975), and Antigone (1984). He also wrote the novel The Transfer of A.H. to San Cristobal (1981), and his autobiography Errata (1997).
