Stanley Pool

The name given to the area in central Africa where the Congo River suddenly widens and becomes a lake. The capital of the Republic of the Congo, Brazzaville, is located on the northwestern bank, and the capital of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (formerly Zaire), Kinshasa, is located on the southwestern bank. In the Democratic Republic of the Congo, it is called Malebo Pool. It has an area of about 450 km2. In the center is M'Bamou Island (180 km2). The Congo River downstream becomes a rapids with rapids such as Livingstone Falls, making it impossible to navigate by ship, so the only way to reach the sea is by rail.

アフリカ中部，コンゴ川下流の川幅が急に広がって湖のようになった部分の呼称。北西岸にコンゴ共和国の首都ブラザビル，南西岸にコンゴ民主共和国(旧，ザイール)の首都キンシャサが向かい合って位置する。コンゴ民主共和国ではマレボ･プールMalebo Poolと呼ぶ。面積約450km2。中央にムバムM’Bamou島(180km2)がある。ここより下流のコンゴ川はリビングストン滝などの急流となり，船の航行ができないので，海への連絡は鉄道による。
