Federigo Enriques

Italian mathematician and philosopher of science. Graduated from the University of Pisa in 1891, he served as professor at the University of Bologna from 1996 to 1923, and at the University of Rome from 1923. However, he resigned from his position during the Fascist regime from 1938 to 1944. Together with G. Castelnuovo and F. Severi, he formed the so-called Italian School of Geometry, and from 1893 he published many papers on algebraic geometry, contributing to the expansion of knowledge about algebraic curves. In addition to his mathematical research, he tackled problems in the foundations of mathematics and the philosophy of science, striving to clarify mathematical and scientific concepts.

イタリアの数学者，科学哲学者。1891年ピサ大学を卒業，96年より1923年までボローニャ大学教授，23年以降ローマ大学教授を歴任。しかし38年から44年までのファシスト体制下ではみずからその地位を辞した。G.カステルヌオーボ，F.セベリらとともにいわゆるイタリア幾何学派を形成し，1893年より代数幾何学に関する論文を多数発表，代数曲線についての知識の拡大に貢献した。数学研究のかたわら，数学基礎論，科学哲学の諸問題に取り組み，数学的･科学的概念の明晰（めいせき）化に努めた。
