Japanese: 水道メーター - すいどうメーター（英語表記）water meter

An instrument that displays the accumulated flow rate of water flowing inside a pipe. Because it is used in water transactions, its structure and inspection are subject to the Weights and Measures Act. Measurement principles are broadly divided into actual measurement and inferential measurement. Actual measurement types are volumetric flowmeters that count the number of times the measuring space of the meter is filled and drained using the pressure of tap water, and come in disk and rotary piston types. Although they are accurate, they are expensive and complex in structure, so they have not been used in Japan recently. Inferential measurement types use the kinetic energy of the flow to turn a vane, and the number of rotations is reduced by gears to display the flow rate.

管内の水流の流量積算値を表示する計器。水道の取引に使われるので，構造や検定などについて計量法の適用をうける。　測定原理は実測式と推測式とに大別される。実測式は水道水の圧力によりメーターの計量空間を充満し排水する動作の繰返回数を計数する容積流量計で，円板形，ロータリーピストン形などがある。精度はよいが構造が複雑で高価なので，日本では最近使われなくなった。推測式は流れの運動エネルギーを利用して羽根車を回し，その回転数を歯車で減速して表示する。
