Theodolite

...A small telescope that aims at a target point can be pointed in the desired direction using two axes, vertical and horizontal, and the direction can be read on the horizontal and vertical scales. A telescope that can be rotated freely around the horizontal axis was once called a transit, while a theodolite was used when it could be used on the bottom and could not be pointed straight up. In addition, the Japanese Industrial Standards (JIS) distinguishes between a transit when the angle scale is read using a magnifying glass and vernier, and a theodolite when the micrometer is used to optically magnify the angle scale.
