1879‐1923 Bulgarian politician and leader of the Peasants' Union. During World War I, he was imprisoned (1915-18) for opposing the entry of pro-German King Ferdinand into the war, and after the defeat he joined the coalition government (1918), and in 1919 became prime minister and signed the Neuilly Peace Treaty. In 1920 he formed a cabinet consisting solely of the Peasants' Union, and implemented radical land reforms and progressive taxation, but was arrested and brutally murdered in a coup d'état by royalists, the military, and the bourgeoisie, who felt a sense of crisis.
