One of the four samhitas (main texts) that make up the Vedas, the holy texts of Brahmanism in ancient India. It is a collection of yajus, or ritual texts, and is said to have come under the jurisdiction of the adhvaryu, the priest in charge of performing ritual acts. Yajus are phrases that address deities, ritual implements, offerings, etc., in conjunction with ritual acts to make the ritual effective, and are written mostly in prose. According to tradition, the Yajur-Veda was handed down in 86 or 101 schools, but only a few of these remain today. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
