...The fact that this power was strong in the past can be seen in the existence of a word called gueredon, which means "a return gift" as opposed to the Middle French word don (derived from Latin donum), which means a gift. Because don evokes gueredon, the word présent came to be used to mean a gift in the 17th and 18th centuries (and became the Japanese word "present" through English), and furthermore, the word cadeau has come to be used in modern times. Cadeau originally meant "decorative lettering," and as can be seen from the fact that it also refers to the provision of chamber music performances during meals, it is a "casual gift" with little binding power of "a return gift."...
