General purpose water supply

Japanese: 雑用水道 - ざつようすいどう

A general term for water supplies that are not intended for drinking. There are some uses of water demand within a city that do not require drinkable water quality, such as firefighting, cleaning, and flush toilets. A water supply separate from the drinking water supply for these uses where low water quality is acceptable is called a general purpose water supply. The current water supply system supplies safe drinking water to the entire city, but when it becomes difficult to secure water sources and maintain the quality of purified water, it becomes more rational in terms of water resource utilization and maintaining public services to divide water demand according to the required water quality and to divide the supply system into uses that absolutely require good quality and uses that require a large amount of water regardless of quality.

人の飲用を用途目的に含めない水道の総称。都市内の水需要の用途には，消火用，清掃用，水洗便所用など，飲めるほどの水質を必要としない部分がある。これら低水質でもかまわない用途向けに飲用水道とは別に設ける水道を雑用水道という。現行の上水道は飲用に安全な水を都市内に一括して供給しているが，水源の確保と浄水水質の維持の両面でそれが困難な状況に立ち至ると，必要とする水質別に水需要を分割し，供給系統を，良質さを絶対に必要とする用途と，質はともかく水量を必要とする用途に分割して考えたほうが，水資源の利用と公共サービスの維持の面で合理的になってくる。
