Born June 15, 1914 in Ruminixarat, Buzau, Romania
[Died] May 12, 1999. New York, U.S.A. Romanian-born American cartoonist and illustrator. His real name was Saul Jacobson. After studying literature and philosophy at the University of Bucharest, he went to Milan to study architecture, and then came to the U.S. in 1942. He eventually joined the staff of The New Yorker magazine, where he took his first steps as a cartoonist. He later became a star of the American comics world, and expanded his activities to include advertising, architecture, and abstract painting. His collected works include Everything in Lines (1945) and Passport (54).

ルーマニア生れのアメリカの漫画家，挿絵画家。本名は Saul Jacobson。ブカレスト大学で文学と哲学を学んだあと，建築を学ぶためミラノにおもむき，1942年にアメリカに渡った。やがて雑誌『ニューヨーカー』のスタッフとなり，漫画家としての第一歩を踏出した。その後，アメリカ漫画界の寵児となり，広告，建築，抽象絵画などにも活動を広げるようになった。作品集には『ものみな線で』 (1945) ，『パスポート』 (54) などがある。
