In Indian thought, there are two instances where the word "nihilism" is applied. One is "nāstikya," a term used by orthodox Brahmanism and orthodox Hinduism against Buddhism and Jainism. This term is said to be derived from the fact that "there is no heaven (na asti) that can be attained in the afterlife by rituals performed according to the provisions of the Vedic scriptures."
