Irabu

Japanese: 伊良部 - いらぶ
Irabu

The former name of a town (Irabu-cho) in Miyako-gun, Okinawa Prefecture. It occupies the western part of the current Miyakojima City. The former Irabu-cho was incorporated as a town in 1982. In 2005, it merged with Gusukube-cho, Shimoji-cho, Ueno-mura, and Hirara-shi to form Miyakojima City. The former Irabu-cho consists of Irabu Island and Shimoji Island (area 9.54 square kilometers, population registered as 33 in 2009) located to the west of Miyakojima, and the two islands are connected by six bridges. It takes 15 minutes by boat from Miyakojima to Irabu. Agriculture, mainly sugarcane cultivation, is thriving. Sarahama has been famous as a base for deep-sea bonito fishing since before World War II. Shimojishima Airport is located here, and it is Japan's first jet pilot training airport. The area is home to Tooriike Pond, a nationally designated place of scenic beauty and natural monument, and Kuninaka Utaki plant communities, a prefecturally designated natural monument. It is also known as a habitat for Grey-faced Buzzards.
