It is a city in the northern part of Mie Prefecture, facing Ise Bay, and located in the Ise Plain. It was incorporated as a city in 1942. It was the site of the ancient Ise Province provincial capital, Kokubunji Temple, and Ishiyakushi and Shono flourished as post towns on the Tokaido in the early modern period. The city center developed from Kobe, a castle town of a small feudal domain, and since 1950, textile, transport machinery, food, and paper processing industries have been established on former military land, making it the second largest industrial city after Yokkaichi. Shiroko, which was part of the Kishu domain, is famous for stencil-making. It also produces radish, seaweed, tea, and azalea seedlings. It is served by the Kansai Main Line, Kintetsu Nagoya Line, Suzuka Line, Ise Railway, and the Tomei-Osaka Expressway, and is home to the Suzuka Circuit, the ruins of Kokubunji Temple (historic site), and the Kanashozu Marsh Plant Community (natural monument). 三重県北部,伊勢湾に面し,伊勢平野にある市。1942年市制。古代伊勢国の国府,国分寺が置かれ,石薬師,庄野は近世東海道の宿場町として栄えた。中心市街は小藩の城下町の神戸(かんべ)から発達,1950年以降旧軍用地に繊維・輸送用機械・食品・紙加工工業が立地,四日市市に次ぐ工業都市となった。紀州藩領だった白子(しろこ)は型紙製造で有名。ダイコン栽培,ノリ養殖,茶,サツキの苗木も産す。関西本線,近鉄名古屋線・鈴鹿線,伊勢鉄道,東名阪自動車道が通じ,鈴鹿サーキット,国分寺跡(史跡),金生水(かなしょうず)沼沢植物群落(天然記念物)がある。194.46km2。19万9293人(2010)。
