A limited reception system for broadcasting services. Digital broadcasting receivers are equipped with CAS functionality, and viewers can insert an IC card into the receiver and register the number written on the card to descramble the image, allowing them to enjoy pay-per-view broadcasts and two-way data broadcasts. For BS digital broadcasting and terrestrial digital broadcasting, BS Conditional Access Systems Co., Ltd. (abbreviated as B-CAS, pronounced as B-CAS), which is funded by NHK, WOWOW, Toshiba, Matsushita Electric Industrial, Hitachi, NTT East, and others, issues cards and manages the basic ledger of users. Since April 2004, BS and terrestrial digital broadcasting cannot be viewed without inserting a B-CAS card into a television for content rights protection (RMP: Rights Management & Protection). Copy-once (recording only once) copy control signals are added to the radio waves, and although it can be recorded once on a digital recording device such as a DVD recorder, it cannot be copied to another digital device. Dubbing 10, which will increase the number of times it can be viewed, is scheduled to be introduced in 2008.

放送サービスの限定受信システム。デジタル放送の受信機にはCASの機能が組み込まれており、視聴者は受信機にICカードを差し込み、カードに記載されている番号を登録すると、スクランブル(契約者以外は見られないように映像を乱すこと)が解除されて有料放送や双方向のデータ放送を楽しめるようになる。BSデジタル放送と地上デジタル放送では、NHK、WOWOW、東芝、松下電器産業、日立製作所、NTT東日本などが出資した株式会社ビーエス・コンディショナルアクセスシステムズ(略称B‐CAS、ビーキャスと読む)がカードの発行や利用者の基本台帳の管理にあたっている。04年4月からは、コンテンツ権利保護(RMP:Rights Management & Protection)のためにB‐CASカードをテレビに差し込まないと、BS・地上デジタル放送は見ることができなくなった。電波にコピーワンス(1回だけ録画可能)のコピー制御信号を加えて放送されており、DVDレコーダーなどのデジタル録画機器では1回は録画できるが、それを他のデジタル機器にダビングすることはできない。08年には、その回数を増やすダビング10が導入される予定。
