Kiyoshi Kawakami

Japanese: 河上清 - かわかみきよし
Kiyoshi Kawakami

Journalist and critic. His pen name was Suiryo. He was born into a family of samurai in the Yamagata Yonezawa domain. After studying at a domain school, he moved to Tokyo and studied hard at the Law School, the National English Association, and Keio Gijuku. He joined the Yorozuchoho newspaper. His colleagues included Kōtoku Shūsui, and he gradually became sympathetic to socialist ideas. He was particularly influenced by economist Tajima Kinji (1867-1934). He helped edit the magazine Labor World, and contributed many essays to Chuokoron, Taiyo, and other publications. In 1900 (Meiji 33), he joined the Socialist Association. In 1901, he also helped found the Social Democratic Party. In July of the same year, he left Yorozuchoho and went to America. After that, he wrote commentaries on international affairs under the pen name Carl Kiyoshi, contributed to magazines in the United States and the United Kingdom, and also worked as a US-based journalist for the Jiji Shimpo and the Osaka Mainichi Shimbun.
