Suśruta‐saṃhitā

Japanese: スシュルタ･サンヒター（英語表記）Suśruta‐saṃhitā

One of the two great classical medical texts of India. It was first written in the 3rd or 4th century, but the history of the medical school behind it is very old and can be traced back to several centuries before. It tells the story of Dhanvantari, a king of Kashi (now Varanasi), imparting teachings to his disciple Sushruta, but both are legendary figures and historical dates cannot be determined. While the other classical medical text, Charaka Samhita, thoroughly explains internal medical treatment, Sushruta Samhita gives detailed descriptions of surgical treatments.

インド二大古典医学書の一つ。書物としての成立は後3～4世紀であるが，その背景にある医学派の歴史はきわめて古く，前数世紀にまでさかのぼることができる。カーシー(現，ワーラーナシー)地方の王ダンバンタリDhanvantariが弟子のスシュルタに教えを授けるという構成になっているが，いずれも伝説的人物であり，歴史的年代を定めることはできない。もう一つの古典医学書《チャラカ･サンヒター》が徹底して内科的治療を説くのに対し，《スシュルタ･サンヒター》には外科的治療法が詳しく語られている。
