The imperial guard of the late Roman Empire. Singular: schola. First identified under Constantine the Great. Consisting entirely of cavalry, they were recruited at first exclusively from barbarians, but after Zeno also from the inhabitants of the empire. Each schola consisted of 500 men. In the 4th century there were five schola in total, in the 5th century there were five in the west and seven in the east. Justinian temporarily increased the number in the east from seven to eleven. Schola soldiers received higher pay and more privileges than soldiers of other units. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
