Year of death: 1193 Year of birth: Unknown. Samurai from the end of the Heian period to the early Kamakura period. Called Kudo Ichiro. His father was Suketsugu. He served Taira Shigemori and became his retainer, and was appointed as Saemon-no-jo in Kyoto. While in Kyoto, he entrusted Ito Manor in Izu Province to his uncle (some say cousin), Ito (Kawazu) Jiro Sukechika, but a dispute arose over Sukechika seizing the land. Suketsune's wife was Sukechika's daughter, and because of this conflict, she was brought back to Sukechika's house and given in marriage to Doi Enpei. Enraged by this, Suketsune took advantage of a hunting party in Izu in 1176 to attack Sukechika, killing Sukechika's legitimate son, Kawazu Sukeyasu. After Minamoto no Yoritomo raised his army, he sided with Yoritomo from an early stage, and after the establishment of the shogunate, he was well versed in music and other arts due to his experience in Kyoto, and was highly trusted by Yoritomo, playing the role of drummer at the banquet when Taira no Shigehira was taken prisoner and when Minamoto no Yoshitsune's concubine Shizue performed a dance in front of the shrine in Tsuruoka, Kamakura, in 1186. He also accompanied the army to Kyushu in pursuit of the Taira clan, and in the Battle of Oshu in 1193. He was killed in the hunting grounds of Fuji by the brothers Soga Juro Sukenari and Goro Tokimune, sons of Kawazu Sukeyasu, as the murderer of their father.
