1870‐1960 Russian painter, art historian, critic, and theater director. Born in St. Petersburg. Also known as Alexandre Benois. Graduated from Moscow University's law department. As the leader of "World of Art," he played an important role in the Russian art world in the early 20th century, and cooperated with Diaghilev's art exhibitions and Ballets Russes performances in Paris, marking an era in Russian art's advance into Western Europe. Born from a deep knowledge of the history and culture of various nations, his paintings were particularly brilliant in the field of stage art, with its unique stylization and color, and his activities extended to all aspects of theatrical art, including writing ballet scripts and directing dramas.
