(1) An oxide film that forms on the surface of metal when it is heated in air or another oxidizing atmosphere. When it is formed during rolling of steel, it can cause scratches on the product, so it is removed by spraying it with high-pressure water. (2) Scale, can scum, limescale. As the water in a boiler becomes concentrated, dissolved minerals (calcium salts, magnesium salts, etc.) precipitate and adhere to the inner walls of the boiler. It significantly impedes heat transfer and causes the boiler to overheat. (3) Ruler, measuring stick. (4) The scale of a map or drawing. (5) Scale. (6) The pan of a balance. (7) Musical scale.
