The 47 Ronin of Ako

Japanese: 赤穂四十七士 - あこうしじゅうしちし

In 1702 (Genroku 15), 47 ronin including Oishi Yoshio, a chief retainer, attacked the residence of Kira Yoshinaka, the head of the Koke clan, and avenged the death of Asano Naganori, the former lord of Ako Domain. Although much is unknown about the personalities of Yoshinaka and Naganori, the circumstances of the attack, and the process leading up to the attack, it was widely praised as a samurai-like and noble act. There was much debate about how to deal with the ronin, but in February of the following year, the shogunate ordered them all to commit seppuku. They are buried at Sengaku-ji Temple in Takanawa, Minato Ward, Tokyo.

1702（元禄15）年，高家 (こうけ) 筆頭の吉良義央 (きらよしなか) 邸に討入り，旧赤穂藩主浅野長矩 (あさのながのり) の仇を討った家老大石良雄ら47人の浪士
義央と長矩の人物像，刃傷事件のいきさつ，討入りに至る経過などについては不明なところが多いが，武士らしい美挙として多くの賞賛をうけた。浪士の処分につき議論多出したが，翌年２月幕府は一同に切腹を命じた。墓は東京都港区高輪の泉岳寺にある。
