A type of tectosilicate mineral. It often forms square columnar crystals, but can also occur in granular or lumpy form. Also called beryl, it refers to a solid solution series of marialite, which contains sodium as an end member, and meionite, which contains calcium as an end member. There is also a type of beryl in which the carbonate groups are replaced with sulfate groups, which is a different species called silvialite. These three types are included in the scapolite group, and scapolite itself is not an independent mineral species. It resembles feldspar, but can be distinguished by its perpendicular cleavage and its ease of decomposition with hydrochloric acid. Those close to the two end members are extremely rare worldwide, and most are intermediate members. It occurs in the limestone contact zone as garnet, wollastonite, vesuvianite, diopside, and tremolite. It also occurs in regional metamorphic rocks formed at high temperatures, such as diorite and gabbro aplite. Its English name comes from the Greek word for pillar, due to its shape.
