...The feudal system, guilds, and excise duties were abolished, and the East India Company was dissolved. The Netherlands, however incompletely, abolished feudal relations and prepared the way for a modern society. However, in 1804 Napoleon appointed Rutger Jan Schimmelpenninck (1761-1825) as head of state and gave him dictatorial powers, effectively ending the Batavian Republic. In 1806 Napoleon appointed his brother Louis as King of the Netherlands, and the Batavian Republic became the Kingdom of the Netherlands (Koninkrijk Holland), but in 1810 the Kingdom of the Netherlands was annexed by France.
