When an antigen invades the body, various lymphocytes, which are the core of the immune system, are stimulated to proliferate and begin to exhibit various functions, thus establishing immunity. This immune response to antigen stimulation is specific to that antigen, and only a very limited number of lymphocytes react to each individual antigen. This is because each lymphocyte has its own specificity and is equipped with a mechanism that allows it to identify and respond to only those antigens that match its own specificity from among the many antigens available.
