[Founding]
On October 1, 1949, from the Tiananmen Tower in Beijing (then called Beiping), Chairman of the Communist Party of China Mao Zedong loudly proclaimed the establishment of the People's Republic of China. With this, a truly unified nation was realized on the Chinese mainland, excluding Taiwan and a few islands such as Kinmen and Matsu, and this date has since been designated as National Foundation Day, or National Day, a national holiday.
