An insect of the family Pinocoptera (illustration). A beautiful, bright green cricket that lives on trees. It is named after the pinocoptera because its body shape resembles that of a pinocopter. It is about 15 mm long. Since it was discovered in Tokyo in 1917, it has been found in Kanagawa, Aichi, Kyoto, Yamaguchi, Fukuoka, and other large cities, but its population decreased significantly for a time. From the mid-1970s, the area of occurrence gradually spread again, mainly to roadside trees, and in the blink of an eye, a major outbreak occurred in areas from Gunma Prefecture to Kyushu. This insect is probably one of the so-called naturalized animals that was brought to Tokyo from abroad on a seedling with eggs laid on it during the Meiji period and established there, and it is believed to have originated in the southern part of mainland China.
