German poet and novelist. Born in Basel. Lost both parents at a young age. After attending the Gymnasium in Karlsruhe, he studied theology at the University of Erlangen. He worked at the normal school in Lörrach, close to his mother's hometown, and was eventually invited to the Higher Secondary School in Karlsruhe, where he served in important positions in education and religion for many years. He became famous for his Alemannic Poems (1803), which simply sang about the nature and human feelings of Baden, but a short prose piece published in the duchy's calendar was widely read as The Treasure Chest of a Rhenish Family (1811), along with Stories of the Bible (1823), which he wrote in his later years. He loved his hometown, the common people, and humor throughout his life. [Aizu Shin] Source: Shogakukan Encyclopedia Nipponica About Encyclopedia Nipponica Information | Legend |
